KATIE'S CANINE CLASSROOM

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Woof! Woof! It's me Katies Sassalot AKC Companion dog excellant, Canine good Citizen, Therapy Dog and ASCA Companion Dog Whosh! That's a mouthful, but don't let the titles fool you. I'm just like you and I won all these tiltes doing what I love best spending time with my human. We were having so much fun we decided to take it on the road and that's how the titles got there.King And Shy ann thier up and coming they just need to mature a little. My number one tip is keep your eyes on your human, follow thier lead and watch the treats come pileing down.

Hey! all you dog lovers out there Welcome to Katies classroom I see you met Katie and and now it's time to get busy.In this room you will find many tips on traning your dogs. I can tell you by experiance that these tips work. I use them in my basic obiedience classes and to prepare my own dogs for obiedience and agility trials.

FOCUS

CLASS #1

Focus: Hold the treat in front of you and say watch me, focus or you may choose your own word. As soon as the dog looks at you praise and then give him the treat. When teaching this command you never look directly into the dogs eyes just at their face. When you are enjoying a snack of cheese and crackers or popcorn while sitting in front of the t.v. without notice say watch me and toss your dog a small morsell. If it lands on the floor grab it try again in a few minutes.

Through out the day say watch me and drop a treat. This teaches the dog that you should always be his main focus and if he's not watching you he may lose the opportunity to get a treat. If the dog does not catch the treat then do your best to get to it before he does. Say leave-it and pick up the treat.

The Focus command is one of the greatest command you can teach your dog. I believe it's the key to teaching all the other commands.

The greatest sign of respect a dog can give you is his undivided attention.

There is nothing more graceful then watching a dog heal with his/her eyes fixed solely on his/her human. A dog that waits patiently every second with his/her eyes on you to recieve his/her next command to work or play is a happy dog. In turn you must reward his total respect with tender loveing care.

SIT

Sit: When teaching the sit hold a treat just over the dogs nose. Slowly move your hand to the back of his head, while steping into your dog with one foot. Your dog will raise his head toward the treat and will have no choice, but to sit.

Have your dog sit before each feeding. If your dog jumps at the bowl when you set it down put your hand on his chest and say wait. Hold him back for 10 seconds. then say good boy/girl and let him/her eat.

When you go out to see him tell him to sit. Don't start petting him until he calms down and sits. Then say good boy/girl and pet him/her. For best results you should tell everyone who goes around your dog to do the same.

FRISCO, DEMONSTRATE THE HEEL COMMAND

HEEL: Use a short leash and have your dog walk on your left side. If the dog forges ahead of you just stop until he comes back to you, start walking again. If the dog doesn't come back to you withen three seconds turn and start walking the opposite direction. If he lags behind you pick up the pace make sharp turns. This encourages him to keep up with you. Always give lots of praise and be cheerful. The dog will soon learn that keeping up with you is fun and the best way to keep the walk running smoothly, but if he's pulling, forging, or lagging behind the walk stops.

DOWN

LAY DOWN:When teaching a dog to lay down start the dog from the sit position. Hold a treat in the palm of your hand let the dog see and smell it. When you are sure the dog is interested in the treat turn your hand palm down. Say lay down and slowly move your hand to the ground with the treat in your hand between your palm and the ground. When the dog is lieing completely on the ground turn your hand over and give the dog his treat. Praise him.

Don't try to teach this from the the standing position until he does it from a sit instantly with no hand signal consistantly 3 to 5 times. In the begining you should be knealing in front of your dog when teaching this command. Some dogs will back track a little when you start a new command so just start off your training sessions with the old command and lead into the new one.

COME

COME WHEN CALLED: USE 6FT LEASH LET DOG GO OUT TO END CALL HIM BACK TO YOU WHILE BRINGING IN THE LEASH PRAISE HIM, THROW A BALL ETC. NEVER CALL YOUR DOG TO YOU WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY WITH HIM. IF YOU NEED TO DISIPLINE HIM GO TO HIM TO DO IT. OTHERWISE YOU WILL BREAK THE DOG OF HIS COME COMMAND.

PLAY PASS THE DOG ( NO YOU DON'T THROW THE DOG ) TWO OR MORE PEOPLE SIT IN A CIRLCE ONE PERSON HOLDS THE DOG AND ANOTHER USING A TREAT OR TOY CALLS THE DOG AND WHEN IT COMES TO YOU GIVE IT THE REWARD AND PRAISE LIKE CRAZY.

IF THE DOG GOES TO THE WRONG PERSON IGNORE THE DOG UNTIL IT GOES TO THE RIGHT PERSON. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE HOUSE OR A FENCED YARD. EVERY TIME YOUR DOG COMES TO YOU FOR ATTENTION SAY DOGS NAME GOOD COME, NOW DOGS NAME AND SIT THEN PRAISE LIKE CRAZY.

SIERRIA, OUR WOLF-HYBRED WAS INTRODUCED TO THE COME COMMAND AT 8 WEEK. NOW SHE WILL TURN ON A DIME WHEN HER NAME IS CALLED AND COME DIRECTLY TO US NO MATTER WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND HER.

STAND

To teach the stand you must first put your dog in a sit. Take a treat and hold it just above the dogs nose, pull your hand back until the dog rises for the treat. Tell the dog to stand. Carress his whithers and down his back so he gets used to being handled, while still in place. The command is mandatory for those who show thier dogs. It is used so that the judge can examine your dog. For those who don't show it is still a great command, because it makes grooming, parasite checks and vet. visits alot eaisier for everyone involved

BASHFUL WANTS TO STAND

OK STANDING IS ONE THING, BUT DO I REALLY HAVE TO STAND FOR THIS? YOU DO KNOW THERE'S A BIRD ON MY HEAD.

BASHFUL IS A 2 YR OLD PARAKEET I RESCUED, SHE LOST HER EYE AT THREE DAYS OLD AFTER A BIRD ATTACK. I SEWED HER UP, HAND RAISED HER AND NOW SHE GOES WITH US TO ELDERLY HOMES AND HARRASES THE DOGS.

BASHFUL CAN BARK LIKE A DOG AND FLY IN ONE DIRECTION DUE TO THE LOSS OF ONE EYE. SHE FLYS IN AN ANGLE ON THE SIDE WITH THE GOOD EYE. ITS AMAZING HOW ANIMALS ADAPT.

SCENES FROM MY PUPPY OBIEDIENCE AND SOCIALIZATION CLASS. THE PUPPIES ARE FROM 4 TO 7 MONTHS OLD.

SMOKEY SITS TO BE BRUSHED.

CRYSTAL LOOKS AWAY

Pictured several students taking a break while crystal and her owner Tamera work on the sit and down commands. Smoky and Queenie are both shepherds and owned by Ken and Gracie.

PUPPY CLASS MASSAGE THERAPY

BRODIE, A LAB IS BEING TAUGHT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO ALLOW GILBERT HIS OWNER TO HANDLE HIM ALL OVER. MASSAGEING A DOG AND RUNNING YOUR FINGERS THROUGH HIS TOES, MOUTH, AROUND HIS EYES AND EARS. TEACHES A DOG TO BECOME ACUSTOMED TO GROOMING, VET CHECKS AND MORE. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT EXCERCISE AND SHOULD BE TAUGHT AT A VERY YOUNG AGE.

WHAT'S NEXT MOM?

HELPFUL HINTS
WHEN TRAINING YOUR DOG ALWAYS HAVE THEM COMPLETE A COMMAND BEFORE YOU INTERACT WITH THEM. DON'T ALLOW THEM TO DECIDE WHEN IT'S PLAY TIME, PETTING TIME, AND MEAL TIME ETC. THAT IS YOUR JOB.

DO NOT FREE FEED INSTEAD FEED TWO TIMES A DAY WHATEVER HE WILL EAT IN 10 TO 15 MINUTES. HE WILL LEARN TO EAT HIS FOOD WHEN IT'S DOWN HE WONT GO HUNGREY BELIEVE ME. UNLESS YOUR DOG HAS A HEALTH PROBLEM THEN LET YOUR VET KNOW YOU ARE IN TRAINING AND ASK HIS ADVISE OR TELL ME THE HEALTH PROBLEM AND I MAY KNOW HOW TO ADVISE YOU. REMEMBER TO ADJUST YOUR FOOD ACCORDINLY WHILE TRAINING, BECAUSE YOU ARE GIVING A LOT OF TREATS AND YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE A WEIGHT OR NUTRITION PROBLEM. IT IS BEST TO ONLY FEED WHOLESOME ALL NATURAL TREATS. THEN REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOU FEED AT MEAL TIME AND IT WILL ALL BALANCE OUT.

PRACTICE TWO TO THREE TIMES A DAY FOR 15 MINUTES EXCEPT ON CLASS DAY ONLY PRACTICE ONCE IN THE MORNING AND THEN NOT UNTIL CLASS TIME.
KEEP NOTES ON PROBLEM AREAS, HAVE QUESTIONS READY FOR NEXT CLASS. THE KEY TO SUCESS IS CONSISTANCY, LOVE, PRAISE AND LOTS OF PATIENCE.
If you want to see more demonstrations of these commands go to Katie's Training tips page 2.
